Never has it been so obvious the previous selection panel blundered by getting rid of Katich and not even offering him a Cricket Australia contract.
Katich is still the ironman of Australian cricket. There is not a tougher or more resilient opening batsman in the country.
He values his wicket like no other player - a far cry from Cape Town, where the Aussie batsmen surrendered without a whimper to be bowled out for 47 after being 9-21.
Surely, Inverarity and his new panel will give Katich serious consideration. The West Australian selection boss told our chief cricket writer Malcolm Conn on Friday: "You've always got to select the best available."
Rod Marsh and Andy Bichel will join Inverarity and Clarke on Australia's new selection panel this week. If it is an independent panel, as we are led to believe, they will ignore Cricket Australia's decision not to give Katich a contract and pick him anyway.
