TELLURIDE, Colo. — For West Michiganders, Telluride Ski Resort in southwestern Colorado is breathtaking in more ways than one. Sure, the air is thinner at 10,000 feet, but it’s the mountain scenery that’ll really take your breath away.
We spent a family Thanksgiving at Telluride’s Mountain Village, which sits at the base of the towering peaks of the San Juan range of the mighty Rockies. It’s a 13-minute free gondola ride into the former mining town of Telluride, nestled in a box canyon carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago.
The town offers lively nightlife set in a historic, easily walkable Western outpost. Brick hotels and clapboard storefronts adorn the National Historic Landmark District; it’s said the core of town, framed by Ajax Mountain, looks much as it did in the 1880s. Don’t be fooled, though: Even though it has a rustic, bohemian feel, Telluride boasts several chic and elegant dining spots.
