ALTON - The city should soon come into ownership of a street that it maintained for years while mistakenly thinking it was Alton property.
The owner, the Alton Housing Authority, plans to sign over the deed to Toledo Avenue, once paperwork is completed. The Alton City Council also must vote to accept the property.
"We've been improving it for quite some time because we thought the city owned the street," said Brad Cunningham, Alton interim public works director.
"Many people use it as a cross-town route to Central Avenue," he said. "I recommended we continue repairing potholes and removing snow. People want to use this street. Not that they would, but the owner could block it off because it is a private road. We want to always keep it open as a thoroughfare. It hasn't been dedicated to the city as long as it's been there."
