ORMOND BEACH -- While city commissioners didn't award any stripes Tuesday night, they did vote unanimously to let a beachside hotel keep its new color scheme.
What first was called paint-striping on the hotel at 505 S. Atlantic Ave. undergoing a $640,000 renovation might have appeared to be in opposition to the city's code. But attorney Dave Hood, representing the owners, introduced architect Richard Brookfield of Ormond Beach, who helped the commission see the difference.
The design creates beauty, gives the building a modern architectural feel and makes the building less plain, Brookfield said.
City Attorney Randy Hayes alerted the commissioners and Mayor Ed Kelley they legally had the ability to allow the look of the building to stay.
After the vote to approve the color scheme, which the motion called "directly inherent to a uniquely recognized architectural style on the building," hotel president Anand Jobalia left the meeting praising the commission.
