Remember how big a deal it was when Olive Garden opened in 2005? If they could see us now. More than a dozen new restaurants opened so far this year in Rapid City, with several more to come, bringing new variety, depth and flavor to the dining scene.

In case you missed one, or want to be sure to try all the choices, here's a look at what is new on the menu in 2011.

New tastes

Dakotah Steakhouse opened in June at 1325 N. Elk Vale Road, locally owned and with a menu focused on regional flavor. Fare includes pan-roasted trout and braised buffalo short ribs.

The owners say it's upscale enough for a fine-dining experience, but a place you can still be comfortable in your blue jeans - a range also seen in the menu, which has an $8 burger and a $45 porterhouse. The restaurant building is thoughtfully designed and the John Lopez bison statue is worth a visit in its own right.
