Friday night. Many of the green army are already in Paris. Me, I am getting up at silly o'clock to catch the Eurostar. Time then to watch Edinburgh - Cardiff before packing my mitre.

The first half was so dire I fell asleep. Like prize fighters scared to land the first punch they only managed to land a couple of penalties and a drop goal between the thirty of them. Eventually the home side Cardiff managed a four point win. If we are to get out of the hole we have dug ourselves in this pool by losing our opening two matches then this, coupled with Edinburgh doing the same next weekend is what we want. None of this will amount to more than a bin full of dirty kit if Irish do not win their remaining matches, Starting in Paris.

Mrs Monk graciously ferries me at 4am to the station. Big Al has my tickets (train, Eurostar, match so it is politic to give him a lift to the station. At that hour Reading is populated with returning clubbers. A couple more join us en route to Paddington. By the time we get to St Pancras numbers have swelled to a dozen in our party with many more green shirts seen flitting in and out of the early morning shadows. All aboard and we relax. Out come the nibbles. Champagne & salmon bagels are traditional for such occasions.
