I never book a hotel without scanning a wide variety of comments on TripAdvisor, Yelp and other review sites. The Affinia Shelburne gets high marks on TripAdvisor, with 91 percent of reviewers recommending it. Recent reviews call it a great value and praise the service.

Said one reviewer: "I was in town for work and had a difficult time finding a hotel room that wasn't too small or too expensive or out of the way. Affinia Shelburne amazingly fit all my criteria."

I'm not sure how you plan to get around New York, but one reviewer found the hotel too far from certain subway stops.
