Power outages gave North Jersey businesses a boost Monday as thousands of residents without power sought shelter and food at restaurants, hotels and convenience stores.
Hotels in Tenafly and Rutherford said they were sold out and were turning away numerous callers looking to book a room.
"I have been here since seven o'clock and the phone has not stopped ringing," said Donna Italia, general manager Clinton Inn Hotel and Event Center in Tenafly , who said the hotel's 119 rooms were sold out Sunday night also.
"It's probably the cold," said Italia, adding that past power outages in the summer have not boosted business the same way. She said the hotel had brought in about 10 extra employees to cope with the increased work load.
A search on Expedia.com, the hotel booking website, showed that almost all of the 31 hotels listed in the Fort Lee - Paramus area had no vacancies. At least two hotels contacted by The Record, including hotels in Saddle Brook and Englewood , had no power and were closed. New York City hotels appeared to have plenty of rooms available.
