The London Grill , the venerable restaurant in downtown Portland's Benson Hotel, is closing after more than half a century in business.

According to a press release, the restaurant plans to stay open for dinners Wednesdays through Saturdays and special events through the end of the year. Breakfast and lunch have moved to the hotel's Palm Court restaurant. Holiday dinners, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day, will be held as planned.

After Jan. 1, 2012, the restaurant, which opened in 1955, will be available exclusively for private dining and special events.

El Gaucho steakhouse, which is also in the hotel, is unaffected.
